Antimicrobial activity of cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) essential oil and cinnamaldehyde against Staphylococcus aureus

The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial activity essential oil (EO) cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) and its major compound cinnamaldehyde against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 14458) bacteria isolated from mastitic milk. Cinnamon EO chemically characterized by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) Bactericidal (MBC) were determined, as well effects MIC CBM on S. cells, visualized Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Transmission Electronics (TEM). A synergistic evaluation with conventional antimicrobials also performed. Results: substance cis-cinnamaldehyde (58.7%) identified component EO. values determined all tested strains ranged between 0.8 1.6 mg.mL-1. SEM TEM images (post-treatment cinnamaldehyde) showed coarse-shaped cells residues adhered cell wall irregular regions at points division. Conclusion: Both undetermined combined antimicrobials, which brings prospect their ability intensify action veterinary drugs used in treatment mastitis caused multidrug-resistant bacteria.
